The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that 14 teams will once again participate in the 2027 and 2031 Cricket World Cups. On Tuesday, the ICC released the schedule of the World Cup from 2024 to 2031. The number of teams in the popular Mini World Cup Champions Trophy will be eight in 2025 and 2029. The last time the Champions Trophy was played in England was in 2017, in the final of which Pakistan defeated India.
Remember that only ten teams participated in the 2019 World Cup and the winning team was the host England. Earlier, the number of teams in the 2015 World Cup was 14. However, according to a statement issued by the ICC Board, the 2027 and 2031 ICC Men's World Cup tournaments will consist of 14 teams and 54 matches. The ICC Men's T20 World Cup will feature 20 teams, and the 2024, 2026, 2028 and 2030 tournaments will consist of 55 matches. It was a controversial decision by the ICC to reduce the number of teams participating in the World Cup to ten. Critics said the decision was an obstacle to making the game popular worldwide. However, ICC officials have now taken the position that the risk of a "miss match" is lessened by this decision and the broadcasters have the same priority.
